Letter enclosing a photograph of her great grandfather John B. Staats, the first toll collector on the Erie Canal; a copy of his appointment, 20 Mar. 1823, signed by Henry Seymour; typed transcript of a passage from Staats' diary describing the passage of the first canal boat through the lock at Albany into the Hudson River, 8 Oct. 1823; typed transcript of a letter written by DeWitt Clinton and S. V. Rensselaer to Henry Seymour, 13 Oct. 1823, recommending that John B. Staats take over from his father, B. G. Staats as collector of tolls for the City of Albany; and a typed transcript of a statement on the canal trade and revenue submitted by John B. Staats, collector, published in the Daily advertiser, 24 Dec. 1824. Also, a 10-page sketch written by Mrs. Schier about her Staats, Van Veghten, and Beekman ancestors.
